Blundells Copse, Tilehurst ~ Hedgelaying

The hedge adjacent to Calder Close had previously been laid about 10 years ago but with no maintenance in the intervening period was now in danger of evolving into a line of trees.

Hazel, hawthorn, dogwood, ash, field maple, spindle and wild rose are among the traditional hedgerow species to be found in this hedge.

Before laying could commence it was necessary to do a considerable amount of clearance, .....

..... including some thinning so that the finished hedge would be neat in appearance.

In due course we were able to start laying.

Staking .....

..... (traditional craft, traditional tool), .....

..... binding, .....

..... and putting on a shine (cutting the surplus wood from the top of the stakes).

Whilst not complete a good start had been made and it was particularly gratifying when a number of local residents stopped to express their interest and appreciation.
