The six-spot, Zygaena filipendulae, is the commonest of the seven species of burnet moth found in Britain. When attacked the day flying burnet moth excludes a poisonous fluid containing hydrogen cyanide (prussic acid), the poison is acquired during the caterpillar stage from the trefoil and vetch on which the caterpillar feeds.
